Sanderson's Equity Team & ISCC Committee

During our November meeting today, we discussed some of the ideas surrounding our Equity Team's partnership with members from our Executive Student Council. Lets put things in perspective:

Equity is all about giving students the resources they need to be successful and to grow. Some people may not be on the same level as some of their other classmates-- they could have a different style of learning-- and therefore this should be taken into account when thinking about education. One of the things that people can sometimes get confused on is the difference between equity and equality. While everyone may have access to the same resources (which could be time and assignments), not everyone can thrive in that setting, or with those limited resources. That is where it is important for there to be a personalized learning process and the availability of resources that each student needs in order to grow and develop.

The next thing I want to give you an overview of real quick is the ISCC Committee itself. So, the Equity Team is partnered with Executive Student Counsel and Ms. Miller--- we wanted to create a space where we could collaborate and bring out these ideas that would ultimately help us accomplish having a more inclusive and equitable school environment. For this meeting, we discussed just two of our main focuses, and got some feedback about everyone's perspectives and opinions. After all, Sanderson is our school, and this committee is working on these things for us, for other students at SHS, and future individuals who will experience the changes and the improvements that we are pushing for. Those two topics are how to increase minority students' involvement in various clubs and extracurricular activities, as well as how to increase student engagement, class attendance, and school attendance for all.

As a group, we broached the following question:

As students-- faculty as well--what can we do to promote an interactive learning environment, as well as create a diverse and inclusive extracurricular environment and minority involvement at school? What are some of your ideas and what feedback and input do you have on this? You can also apply this to virtual learning--, what can we do to spread the word to incoming students-- to freshman, and get them involved. What is your perspective-- your view on things?

Several participants brought up the fact that our school website isn't very helpful when it comes to supplying club information, and giving the necessary links for student to get involved. We hinted on the fact that there are a multitude of clubs that don't have recognition on the website. Another key conversation point we mentioned is the accessibility and the time scheduling of club meetings. Many people have jobs or have other responsibilities, including sports, as well as family obligations-- which prevent them from making those activities and events.

Whomever would like to be a part of that Committee is welcome to do so. Feel free to reach out to Elizabeth Phillips for more information about that via remind or email. We are always looking for more contributors, and people who want to share ideas for improvement. Thank you all who came to our meeting today, and if you are interested in attending in the future, we hope that you plan on doing so!
